Instead of working with how people think they or others behave, we work with their experiences and choices.
The way people interpret situations and choices is how we understand Culture.
Preparation: Context and Collection
We will explore the context and define boundaries, design a collection framework and support the organization in gathering the necessary data to enable new patterns and discoveries. We will coach the organization in collection practices and engage a test group to refine the language.
Participation: Making Sense of Culture
We will have data patterns from the experiences collected and will explore those together with the organization. Making sense of authentic culture is learning how the organization and its members interpret their experiences and what drives daily choices. We will decide together what represents company culture.
Action: Direction & Declaration
When we understand more about the organization's culture and have experiences that represent what we want to see more of and what we want to see less of in the future, we can work on what can support that direction. With direction, we can set narratives, declarations, and new actions.
On the graph above, every dot connects to one shared experience. By identifying patterns of interpretation, we are ready to explore what matters most to people, the team, and the organization.
As much as you, we don't like guesswork. Here are the ways people get in wrong when working with culture:
Not collecting information or listening to the people who create and enact it.
Relying on abstract data, such as: how much collaboration from 1-10?
Starting with ready-made archetypes to try to fit your culture in a box.
By not creating a platform for people to share their experiences anonymously.
Instead, we combine data and actionable insight:
Find patterns that people share anonymously about day-to-day situations.
Work collectively with our discoveries to turn them into actionable steps.
By identifying what is hidden, we can host conversations that make sense and act on topics that really matter.
By focusing on pattern finding, we steer clear of confirmation bias. This bias is often present in processes involving interviews or focus groups. Therefore, we only pattern data and formulate workable hypotheses.
We will form different stakeholder groups to interpret and make sense of the data, strategically separating and integrating the groups.
The collection of real data is great for understanding and generating new insights, but it is also a basis for actionable decisions since the experiences can support actions connected to reality and towards a desired outcome.
Just like you, we don't like guesswork. We will use a process based on actual data and intervene for a decisive cultural change.
